Topic: Welcome to the DBA Escape Room.
This month we will be doing an escape room challenge. Unlike most escape rooms we will not be physically prevented from leaving, but as DBAs we know that the effect is the same when a data is at risk. You are not going home until the database is fixed (or if you do, print out a bunch of resume before you go). We will be working through two of the corruption challenges put forth by Steve Stedman at

In the Week 1 Database corruption challenge we will be recovering a database that has become corrupt. All we have to work with is a single backup of the corrupt databases. The conventional wisdom is that when DBCC reports corruption, the solution is to restore from the last good backup. But as you know, that often is not an acceptable solution. So how can we get back all of our data from somewhere in a corrupted database?
In the Week 3 Database corruption challenge we will be recovering a database where the .mdf file has been lost. All we have are the last full backup, 3 transaction log backups and the .trn file that was recovered.
A few of us will have laptops with the challenge files and a SQL2014 Server, and all of the challenge files on a thumb drive in case we want to split into teams and solve in parallel or as a competition. Matthew Tessier will be leading this adventure.
